Bennington Young Writers Awards: cash prizes, college aid and the senior application step

By Meritously · Published · 3 min read

Bennington’s writing competition has two different financial outcomes: a cash prize and possible scholarship support if you enroll at Bennington. They should not occupy the same line in your funding plan. Seniors also have an admissions step that younger entrants do not.

Use the route for your grade

The current Young Writers rules allow grades 9-12 worldwide, with teacher or mentor approval. Grade 12 entrants must first submit a Common or Coalition Application and indicate Young Creators interest. The writing deadline is November 1 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern; the 2026-27 announcement confirms the year.

The rules prohibit AI involvement in brainstorming, drafting, revision or collaboration. This article is an explanation of the process, not material to use in an entry. Work directly from the official instructions with your sponsoring teacher.

First-place winner enrolling at BenningtonFull tuition for four years; not all living costs.
Distinguished recipient enrollingHalf tuition for four years.
Finalist enrollingA $25,000 annual scholarship for four years.

The current contest page is more specific than announcement wording about “winners.” Do not infer that every prize tier receives full tuition. Bennington’s general aid materials also use different Young Writers award descriptions; ask the college to confirm the applicable package in writing before relying on it.

A scholarship tied to a particular college changes the price of that college. It does not reduce the cost of every other school on your list. If you receive an offer, compare the remaining cost and renewal terms with the alternatives you would actually choose.

Decide whether the entry fits your current plans

For a senior, the first practical question is whether you want to complete the required Bennington admissions application. For a younger student, it is whether you have work you want to submit and a sponsor who can review the entry. Neither decision needs a prediction that you will win.

Put the school-application step and writing submission on separate rows of your tracker. Completing one should not automatically mark the other complete. Use the provider’s confirmation messages to establish what has actually been received.

Check the document, not just the idea

The current writing limit is 1,500 words, including surrounding text, with one category selected. Verify the genre-specific instructions on the official page before submission.

A final administrative pass can be separate from creative editing: confirm the chosen category, word count, sponsor information and file format. Save the exact submitted file and confirmation so you can answer any later question about the version received.

Use the full-tuition comparison guide when evaluating college-linked awards. Official pages checked October 29, 2026. Scholarship descriptions should be confirmed against the eventual admission and aid offer.
