GE-Reagan Scholarship 2027: build a leadership application that holds together

By Meritously · Published · 3 min read

For GE-Reagan, the useful question is whether you can explain your leadership with specific decisions and outcomes. A long activity list does not do that by itself. Choose an experience you understand well enough to discuss in an interview, including what you would change.

The scholarship is competitive. Treat it as one part of your funding search while you continue to compare college offers and other awards.

The 2027 application in brief

The official program page sets the deadline at January 7, 2027, 3 p.m. Eastern. The core requirements include U.S. citizenship, current high-school senior status with winter 2026 or spring 2027 graduation, a minimum 3.0 GPA or equivalent, and full-time study at an accredited U.S. four-year college for 2027-28. Financial information is considered; the provider encourages applicants not to rule themselves out solely because of family finances.

Possible materialQuestion to answer in your own notes
An activity you organizedWhich decision did you personally make?
A problem at workWhat constraint changed your approach?
A service commitmentWhat did the community actually need?
A setbackWhat did you do after the first plan failed?

These are planning questions, not the provider’s essay prompts. A modest project can produce a clear account of responsibility; a large project can produce a vague one. Write down names, dates and your actual role before deciding which example fits the live application.

An illustrative contrast: “I led a food drive” leaves your contribution unclear. A factual account of how you chose collection locations, adjusted a pickup schedule and checked what the pantry could accept tells the reader what you did. Do not borrow those details if they did not happen to you.

Leave room for later rounds

The initial application includes activities, service, work, a leadership-and-service essay and goals. The official timeline places transcripts and a recommendation at the semifinalist stage, with virtual finalist interviews later. Read the portal’s current instructions rather than uploading extra documents indiscriminately.

Keep a copy of the application you submit. If you advance, reread it before preparing new material so dates, responsibilities and goals remain consistent. A recommendation request is easier when you can explain why that person has relevant knowledge of the work you described.

Read the four-year number correctly

The award is $10,000, renewable for up to three additional years: as much as $40,000 total. Renewal depends on continued eligibility, as the 2027 application portal explains.

Put the annual amount in a one-year cost comparison and keep future years conditional. Ask your college how an outside award affects its aid before assuming the full amount reduces your family contribution. Use the offer comparison guide when actual decisions arrive.
