Houston Tier One: the 2027 deadline, application route and housing gap
The University of Houston Tier One Scholarship is a competitive option for incoming fall 2027 freshmen. Submit both the undergraduate admission application and the separate Tier One application by November 2, 2026, at 5 p.m. Central. The recommendation has a later deadline: November 9 at 5 p.m. Central.
Its funding is substantial, but the coverage changes during college: tuition and required fees last four years, while the housing and meal benefit lasts two. That difference matters when comparing it with a package that covers living expenses throughout a degree.
Separate the four-year benefit from the two-year benefit
On a smaller screen, scroll the table sideways to see every column.
| Benefit | Published coverage | Budget question |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition and required fees | Four years; five for architecture | Which remaining course or personal costs must you fund? |
| Campus housing and meal plan | First two years | How will you pay living expenses in years three and four? |
| Research and study abroad | One-time $1,000 research and $2,000 study-abroad stipends | Which activity costs exceed the relevant stipend? |

An admission submission does not finish Tier One
The Tier One FAQ says the scholarship form needs a UH ID, which normally arrives within four business days after the Common Application submission. Starting the admission application on the scholarship deadline leaves a preventable access problem.
The recommender receives an upload route after you provide their details. Check the application status and remind the recommender if the letter is missing. Your own submission and the later recommendation deadline should occupy separate rows in your tracker.
For example, a student who has submitted Common App but cannot yet enter the Tier One portal has completed only one part of the process. Save the admission confirmation, obtain the ID, finish the scholarship form and then verify the letter. Do not treat one confirmation email as proof that the entire file is ready.
Strong academics help; the published figures are not a guaranteed-award grid
The fall 2027 eligibility page describes 1400 SAT, 30 ACT or a top-ten-percent rank as credentials that improve an applicant’s chances. It also explicitly allows test-optional applicants. These figures do not promise an award or define a published automatic payment.
This route suits an incoming freshman who wants Houston, has a strong record to explain and can complete a separate competitive application. Transfer, graduate and already-enrolled UH students are outside the FAQ’s eligibility route. Do not spend the final application days gathering documents for an award that excludes your entry category.
Compare the award you can actually keep
Tier One replaces UH Academic Excellence rather than adding to it, according to the FAQ. A hypothetical offer comparison should therefore use one applicable UH merit package, not the sum of both headline awards.
Build a four-year budget with one row per academic year. Enter the tuition benefit in all covered years, the living benefit only in the first two, and your remaining costs separately. Keep another affordable college option while selection is pending. Start with the full tuition versus full ride comparison, then use the scholarship directory to build a shortlist whose deadlines and eligibility you can meet.
