KU merit scholarships: the GPA snapshot matters more than senior-year hopes
KU's freshman merit scholarships use GPA rather than a required test-score tier. The detail to check is which GPA and which semester the university uses. The published policy does not promise a scholarship upgrade after senior-year grades arrive.
This guide focuses on domestic nonresident freshmen. Although KU's award chart also names international applicants, their process should be checked separately rather than inferred from the domestic enrollment instructions.
Selected nonresident award tiers
On a smaller screen, scroll the table sideways to see every column.
| GPA on KU's 4.0 basis | Award | Annual amount |
|---|---|---|
| 3.25-3.49 | KU Access | $8,000 |
| 3.50-3.69 | KU Performance | $10,000 |
| 3.95+ | KU Excellence | $16,000 |
The official freshman scholarship page contains the intermediate tiers too. It says scholarship information is reviewed annually and may change; the displayed grid is not explicitly labeled with an entering class. Confirm the grid attached to your admission offer.
Read the GPA policy before estimating an award
KU uses the more favorable weighted or unweighted GPA on its 4.0 basis after the sixth high school semester. A weighted GPA must reflect a school-wide policy and appear on all students' transcripts. KU says it does not round to the nearest tenth, review seventh-semester grades or upgrade scholarships after admission.
A student with a 3.94 should therefore not budget the 3.95+ tier merely because the transcript rounds to one decimal elsewhere. Send the actual record and let the university apply its policy. If the school uses another scale, request the official conversion outcome rather than inventing a conversion yourself.
Finish the file, then verify the award
KU lists December 1 for a complete freshman admission application, including an official or unofficial transcript. The financial-aid policy also requires eligible freshman enrollment in at least 12 KU credits each fall and spring immediately following high school graduation. Exclusively online bachelor's programs are excluded.
After admission, compare the award name, residency and GPA category with your own expectation. A mismatch is a reason to ask for a record check, not to assume a later term will fix it. Keep the original award notification with the conditions that accompanied it.
Plan beyond the first year
KU's renewal policy requires a cumulative 3.0 KU GPA and full-time enrollment. The freshman award lasts for the first bachelor's degree or eight continuous semesters, whichever comes first. Missouri architecture tuition reciprocity cannot combine with the merit scholarship.
Compare the annual reduction against the actual nonresident tuition and living budget. Then examine whether your degree plan fits the funded semesters. If you expect an interruption or a lighter final term, ask about that scenario before assuming the award continues. See renewal planning for a practical checklist.
Official pages checked October 29, 2026. The current published policy is reported without asserting an unprinted 2027 guarantee; your entering-class offer remains the controlling document.
