Do merit scholarships pay during a co-op semester?

By Meritously · Published · 3 min read

A co-op semester can change when your merit scholarship pays, even if you remain enrolled in your degree. Do not divide an annual award across every term of a five-year co-op plan and assume the result is available for rent.

Cincinnati and RIT are useful examples because both publish specific co-op aid guidance. The question is when funding applies, not whether a co-op degree is better or worse value.

Cincinnati’s co-op page explains that some renewable awards can cover a four-year equivalent even when the academic program takes longer. Summer aid is considered separately, and students should report their rotation.

RIT’s policy also excludes state grants and most outside scholarships from co-op terms. Some federal aid may apply, but a loan is not a scholarship and individual eligibility still matters.

Use one row per term

A useful plan has columns for classroom or co-op status, tuition, living costs, expected scholarship payment, work income and the payment dates. If you will relocate for work, add travel and any overlap between leases. Do not use gross anticipated wages as though the full amount were available on move-in day.

For a hypothetical $10,000 annual scholarship paid as $5,000 per eligible classroom semester, one classroom term plus one co-op term does not automatically produce two $5,000 payments. Ask how an eligible summer classroom term would fit, and whether using funding in summer changes the remaining number of terms.

Check three approvals separately

Confirm the academic co-op registration, the financial-aid treatment and any outside sponsor’s permission. An employer offer does not establish that the university has recorded the right enrollment status. A university co-op policy does not override a private scholarship’s permitted-use terms.

RIT requires co-op registration with both its registrar and career-services office for applicable aid to reach the account. Cincinnati asks students to keep the aid office informed when the schedule changes. Put the office’s response alongside the actual rotation, especially if it changes after an award is accepted.

Before committing to a rotation
