Can a National Merit package pay for a fifth year or graduate study?
Sometimes, but each part of the package can end at a different time. Alabama’s published National Merit Finalist package includes tuition for up to ten semesters of degree-seeking undergraduate, graduate or law study. Its housing and annual undergraduate supplement have shorter durations.
That makes it worth investigating for an eligible student planning an extended or accelerated degree path. It does not mean every National Merit award pays for graduate school, or that a fifth year costs nothing.
Split the package into separate clocks
On a smaller screen, scroll the table sideways to see every column.
| UA National Merit benefit | Published duration or restriction | Budget implication |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | Up to five years or ten semesters; degree-seeking undergraduate, graduate or law study. | Confirm which semesters your intended program can use. |
| On-campus housing | Four years at the regular room rate defined by UA. | A fifth-year housing budget needs a separate funding source. |
| Undergraduate supplement | Published at $4,000 annually for four years. | Do not extend it into year five or assume it becomes a graduate stipend. |
| Research or international-study allowance | One-time $2,000, available after one undergraduate year at UA. | A designated one-time benefit is not recurring living-expense money. |
The extended duration still has entry conditions
The official UA National Merit page requires Finalist status, a GPA of at least 3.5 after junior year and naming Alabama as college of choice before May 1, 2027. It lists December 4 as the application-and-documents priority deadline. Later admission consideration is space-available.
Check your recognition stage carefully. A Semifinalist award is not the same offer as a Finalist package, and a college-sponsored NMSC award is not automatically the university’s entire advertised package. Keep the actual university offer with your NMSC correspondence.
Put the funding beside a semester-by-semester degree plan
Write the planned degree, enrollment status, tuition charge and remaining scholarship semesters for each term. Ask the academic department when graduate admission occurs and the scholarship office when funding can cross that transition. Those are separate approvals.
For example, a hypothetical student completing a bachelor’s degree in six semesters should not automatically treat four remaining tuition semesters as cash they can use anywhere. Remaining eligibility is a university benefit subject to program and scholarship rules; it is not a transferable account balance.
Similarly, a student who needs a ninth undergraduate semester should calculate housing, meals, fees and other uncovered costs for that term. Tuition coverage can be valuable while still leaving a substantial bill. Do not assume that summer enrollment uses the award in the same way as fall or spring.
UA’s graduate-use policy requires full-time, degree-seeking enrollment in a main-campus graduate or law program in the immediate available semester after undergraduate graduation, excluding summer. Students submit a request during the semester they plan to graduate; approval is not automatic. The scholarship FAQ says a package’s tuition portion can be used for graduate study. Confirm how these conditions apply to your National Merit offer before committing to an accelerated plan.
A published benefit and a discretionary extension are different
UA’s scholarship policies also describe a separate extension request for eligible Alabama residents admitted to an Accelerated Master’s Program. Its requirements include degree progress, prior graduate-level coursework and timing of the request; committee approval is not guaranteed. For specified major packages, only tuition can be extended.
Treat that application as a possible later decision, not confirmed funding in an entering-student budget. An extension process should not be added to a published maximum until the university approves it for you.
Questions to resolve before choosing a program
Ask whether your intended degree is eligible, how early graduation affects the balance, which academic standards apply after the transition and which charges remain uncovered. Request an answer tied to your entry year and award name.
