Penguin Random House Writing Awards 2027: choose an eligible new piece

By Meritously · Published · 3 min read

Before polishing a Penguin Random House entry, check where the piece has already been used. This competition’s originality restrictions can rule out a strong school assignment or college essay. Starting from the correct work is more valuable than perfecting an ineligible submission.

Check the student and the writing

The official Scholarship America page lists a January 15, 2027 deadline at 3 p.m. Central, with only the first 1,000 applications accepted. Applicants must be U.S. public-school seniors graduating spring 2027, age 21 or younger, planning eligible postsecondary enrollment in fall 2027. Employee and family exclusions also apply. The publisher’s awards page also explains the categories, deadline and application cap.

Eligible work must be new, unpublished and unawarded: the rules exclude class assignments, college essays and work from previous contests or submissions. Seven $10,000 awards are described, including a separate NYC-area award; the money is paid over four years, not all at once.

Choose the form you can sustain

The listed forms include poetry, spoken word, fiction, memoir, graphic novel and the designated freedom-of-expression prompt. Do not select a category because it appears to have fewer competitors; this review does not establish category-level entry counts or winning odds.

For your own planning, distinguish the experience you want to explore from the literary form you want to use. A story might depend on scene and action; a poem might depend on compression and sound. Choose the form in which you can make deliberate decisions, then read that category’s exact requirements.

On a smaller screen, scroll the table sideways to see every column.

Separate creative revision from file preparation

The provider requires a typed, double-spaced PDF in at least 12-point type, no longer than ten pages. Spoken-word entries also require an audio submission. Consult the official page for naming and page-number instructions.

Finish a readable draft before spending time on export settings. During revision, identify passages that are clear only because you know the backstory. You can cut a paragraph that explains the intention when the scene itself can convey it. That is editorial advice, not an instruction to imitate past winners.

Once you have the final document, inspect the exported PDF itself. A source document can look fine while the PDF contains a blank page, clipped text or an unexpected font. Make sure the uploaded file is the final version, not a similarly named earlier draft.

Use a realistic time and money plan

The early application cap makes a personal submission target useful, but speed does not repair an eligibility problem. Choose a date that leaves room for review and technical problems, and check that the program is still accepting entries before doing the final upload.

Keep the award out of confirmed funding until selected. If an offer arrives, use its actual payment schedule in your budget. The scholarship payment guide explains why the total award and the amount available for your next bill can differ.
