Understanding awards

Two scholarships from one college: do they add together or replace each other?

By Meritously · Published · 3 min read

Two award names do not always mean two payments. A college may replace one merit award with a larger one, while allowing only designated scholarships to stack. Add the amounts only after the written terms confirm that they can be received together.

RIT and Arkansas illustrate the distinction. These examples concern awards from the same institution; outside-scholarship treatment and need-based aid adjustments require their own checks.

Treat an upgraded offer as a replacement until confirmed otherwise

Suppose a hypothetical college first offers $8,000 a year and later sends a $12,000 award letter. If the later award replaces the first, the new annual total is $12,000, not $20,000. If the institution explicitly says a separate $2,000 award stacks, the combined total becomes $14,000, subject to any cap.

Keep the date and status of each notice. “Supersedes,” “replaces,” “in addition to” and “up to” describe different outcomes. A newer name can also reflect a different funding source rather than an extra benefit. Ask if the letter is unclear.

Stackable does not mean unrestricted

RIT limits its scholarships to tuition charges. Even when two awards can combine, that does not automatically make excess tuition-restricted funds available for housing or books. A student with another tuition-paying benefit should ask how the full set of awards will be coordinated.

Create one row for each source and columns for annual amount, allowed expenses, replacement rule and renewal. Keep outside aid separate until the financial aid office confirms its effect. The total in a marketing comparison is less useful than the amount the revised account can actually apply.

Ask a question the office can answer precisely

Use the exact award names: “Can I receive Award A and Award B in the same semester, and what is the combined payment after restrictions?” Attach the notices through the official channel. Use the stacking guide for the broader aid questions and compare offers only with the confirmed total.
