Scholarships through employers: check your job and your family's benefits

By Meritously · · 3 min read

An employer's education program may be listed under benefits, a company foundation or a separate scholarship administrator. If you only search for scholarships by your intended major, you may never see it.

Check your own employer and, where relevant, a parent's or guardian's employer. Ask for the current eligibility rules before assuming your connection qualifies.

Find out what kind of education support it is
ProgramWhat to check
Employee scholarshipWho can apply, and how are recipients selected?
Dependent scholarshipHow does the program define an eligible dependent?
Tuition reimbursementWhat approval and completed coursework are required before payment?
Education benefit through a partner schoolWhich institutions and programs are included?

These labels are starting points for questions. Use the employer's actual terms to understand the offer. A reimbursement arrangement may involve paying an expense before requesting repayment, while a competitive scholarship still requires selection. Neither should be counted as confirmed funding simply because you have a job there.

Ask about any employment commitment, repayment condition or restriction on changing programs before agreeing to the benefit. Keep those terms with the funding amount.

A company name does not tell you which application track fits

The Burger King Foundation's Scholars program describes opportunities for high school seniors as well as Burger King employees and their families, supporting college and postsecondary vocational or technical education. Its official page directs applicants to the current application site for the detailed rules.

That does not mean every person connected to the brand qualifies for every track. Check which application category fits, the covered employment relationship and any additional academic or financial criteria. The general description is a lead; the current eligibility terms decide whether you can apply.

For any franchise business, ask which company actually employs you and whether it participates in the program you found. A familiar brand on the building is not enough information to answer that question.

Ask human resources for the current policy

A short request is enough to start: 'Does the company offer scholarships or education benefits for employees or dependents? Could you send me the current eligibility rules, application deadline and administrator's contact information?' A parent or guardian can ask their own employer about a dependent program.

Then check the details that apply to your situation: full-time or part-time status, required length of employment, eligible family relationships, study level and approved institutions. Ask when employment eligibility is measured. Applying while employed and remaining eligible when the award is paid may be separate conditions.

Use the employer's official benefits channel or the administrator linked from its official page. If you find an old flyer, check that the program and application cycle still exist before preparing materials.

Plan around approvals and payment dates

Write down whether approval is required before enrollment, before a course begins or after final grades. Ask what documentation is needed and how long the payment process is expected to take. Get the answer before using the benefit to cover a bill that comes sooner.

Check whether the award renews, requires a new application or applies only once. If you expect to change jobs, hours or schools, ask how that would affect eligibility before relying on another term of funding.

Finally, tell your college about confirmed funding through its required reporting process. Use our guide to combining scholarships to ask how it affects your existing offer, and track the employer's deadlines alongside your college's deadlines.
