SMU Hunt Scholarship: the leadership supplement and the aid it replaces
SMU's Hunt Leadership Scholarship requires its own essay and video in addition to the admission application. An early SMU application does not automatically complete Hunt consideration; the additional materials have a January 15 deadline.
Hunt also replaces centrally administered SMU merit aid. A student who already has a merit offer should compare the revised package rather than adding the two headline amounts.
What the current application asks for
On a smaller screen, scroll the table sideways to see every column.
| Item | Published requirement |
|---|---|
| Admission | Completed first-year SMU application |
| Hunt essay | Up to three double-spaced pages, submitted through the portal |
| Video | Unique YouTube statement up to 90 seconds |
| Deadline | Admission and Hunt materials by January 15 |
| Finalist interview | Required; March 4-5, 2027 |
The official application instructions limit eligibility to first-time, full-time domestic students and make test submission optional. The video may be unlisted but must stay available through the interview stage. Check the full academic guidance and prompts; this table summarizes the process rather than replacing it.
Show how you led, not only the position you held
Choose an example with a concrete problem, other people involved and a decision you had to make. Explain what you contributed, how you listened or adjusted and what changed. Leadership outside school can be relevant, so do not assume only elected student offices provide usable evidence.
Use the short video for one clear idea and the essay for fuller development. Read the current prompts before reusing earlier writing. A polished production is less useful than a specific account that you can discuss honestly if invited to interview. Check that the uploaded file and video link work before the deadline.
Compare the replacement package
The program overview describes support of up to 75% of tuition and fees over four years. Its application policy says Hunt supersedes centrally administered merit aid, while other eligible departmental or need-based support follows the stated limits. Some institutional need-based awards are reduced when Hunt is added.
For a fictional example, replacing a $25,000 merit award with a $40,000 award improves that portion of the package by $15,000, not $40,000. These are not Hunt award amounts. The calculation illustrates why you should compare the total revised grants and remaining bill, including living expenses, rather than summing award names.
Consider the program alongside the scholarship
Hunt includes a leadership-development experience, including courses and mentoring opportunities. Read the expectations as part of deciding whether the program fits your interests and schedule. A large scholarship is a strong reason to investigate a program, but its ongoing commitments also deserve attention.
Before accepting, obtain the exact offer, renewal conditions and treatment of other aid. Keep ordinary financial-aid applications moving while the selective process is unresolved.
