Study abroad scholarships: match the funding to your program and timeline

By Meritously · · 3 min read

The program fee looks manageable until you add airfare, a deposit and the expenses that are not included. A study abroad scholarship can help, but only if it supports your kind of program and arrives when you can use it.

Before writing an essay, identify the destination, dates, academic credit and home-college approval for the program you want to attend.

A semester abroad and a degree overseas are different searches

Write down what you are applying for: a short course, a semester exchange, an internship or a full degree at an overseas institution. Search terms can overlap even when the funding rules do not.

The Gilman Scholarship FAQ explains that Gilman does not fund a full degree overseas. Its study abroad funding should not enter the budget for that different plan.

Ask your campus study abroad office which programs it approves, how credits will count and where to find institution-specific funding. Also check the program provider's own funding page. Record whether an award reduces the published fee or sends money separately, since those arrangements affect the budget differently.

Check the requirements before treating an award as a fit

Under Gilman's published eligibility rules, applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals enrolled as undergraduates in good standing at an accredited U.S. institution. Pell Grant eligibility is specific: applicants must receive a Pell Grant during the application period or provide proof they will receive one during the abroad term.

The program must also meet its credit-bearing study abroad or internship requirements and applicable destination rules. Read the current page for the full conditions. Being an undergraduate who wants to travel is not enough to establish eligibility.

For every other award, do the same check from its own rules. Note the relevant citizenship or residence, enrollment, academic credit, destination and financial criteria. If a condition is unresolved, mark it as a question rather than counting the award as available money.

Put campus certification on the calendar

An application may need another person's action after you finish your part. Gilman's certification instructions describe review by campus study abroad and financial aid advisers. Check both the student deadline and the certification deadline for your cycle.

Contact the appropriate office early enough to resolve an incorrect program date, missing approval or uncertainty about your aid. Your submission confirmation does not necessarily mean every required step is complete.

Track the program application, scholarship application, adviser certification and deposit separately. Put each owner and date in the deadline tracker, then check the official portals for completion.

Suppose a fictional program costs $5,000 in total. A confirmed $2,000 grant and $1,200 in savings leave an $1,800 gap. A pending scholarship does not close that gap yet. If the deposit is due before grant payment, there is also a timing question even though the grant is confirmed.

Ask the program and financial aid office about payment arrangements before making a commitment you cannot cover. Keep the written terms with your budget, including what happens to funding if the program changes or you withdraw.
