Texas State Assured vs. test-optional merit: scores, class rank and renewal
Texas State's Assured scholarships use published score and academic criteria, while its test-optional Merit route involves academic review and available funding. The two routes should not be treated as equally predictable offers.
For the Assured examples below, a qualifying score alone is not enough: class rank or the listed diploma alternative also matters. Build your estimate from the complete row, not the most favorable number in it.

On a smaller screen, scroll the table sideways to see every column.
| Route | Annual award | Academic requirements shown |
|---|---|---|
| President's Honor | $12,000 | SAT 1420+ or ACT 32+, plus top 25% rank or IB/AP Capstone diploma |
| Achievement: selected tier | $8,000 | SAT 1260-1410 or ACT 27-31, plus top 25% rank or IB/AP Capstone diploma |
| Test-optional Merit | Varies; review and funding dependent | No score; top 35% rank or listed diploma alternative |
The official freshman scholarship page applies these amounts to new offers for students admitted summer 2026 onward. This is a selected comparison, not the full award chart. Assured eligibility requires admission and qualifying credentials before the first fall or spring semester; score definitions use one test sitting, not a superscore.
Choose the route your evidence actually supports
Compare your official score and reported rank with the same row. If your school does not rank, ask admissions how it handles that record rather than converting a GPA into a guessed percentile. If using a diploma alternative, confirm which completed credential and documentation are needed.
A test-optional admission strategy can still lead to scholarship review, but a possible variable award should remain pending in your budget. Conversely, the word Assured should not lead you to skip required records. The guarantee is conditional on meeting the university's qualifications and process.
Check the actual package before adding benefits
Texas State does not combine freshman Assured support with its Merit or Transfer Assured scholarship. Eligible nonresidents may also qualify for a resident-tuition waiver, subject to the university's conditions. Treat that waiver as unconfirmed until the university establishes your eligibility.
For planning, make separate entries for the scholarship and any confirmed tuition-rate change. Apply each once. A fictional $12,000 annual scholarship spread across four renewed years totals $48,000, but that total is not a first-year payment and should not be subtracted from a one-year bill.
Protect the earned-credit requirement
These Assured and Merit routes list a 3.25 Texas State cumulative GPA and 28 passing Texas State hours each fall/spring year, with up to eight continuous semesters under the terms. AP and CLEP do not count toward that annual earned-hour requirement.
A student arriving with advanced credit should therefore distinguish progress toward graduation from credits needed to renew aid. Plan an appropriate course load with an adviser rather than assuming previously earned credit satisfies both. Ask before a reduced-load semester, withdrawal or early graduation.
