UAH out-of-state scholarships for 2027: when a score changes the award

By Meritously · Published · 3 min read

At the University of Alabama in Huntsville, an eligible nonresident freshman can appear in a test-free scholarship tier and still have a reason to submit a qualifying score. The 2027-28 chart contains different GPA-and-score combinations, so looking up only your GPA can miss the relevant row.

This analysis concerns applicants outside Alabama and Tennessee. Those two states have their own charts. The published nonresident chart also includes international students currently residing in the United States; other international applicants should follow their own category's instructions.

4.0+No ACT/SAT score$13,000
4.0+31-36 ACT or 1390-1600 SAT$22,000

These are selected rows from UAH's official nonresident chart, not all possible combinations. The university considers admitted first-time freshmen without a separate academic-scholarship application.

Keep score updates separate from application deadlines

UAH uses ACT/SAT superscores and states that updated transcripts or scores received after May 15, 2027 will not count for scholarship upgrades. That is an upgrade cutoff, not permission to wait until May to start admission. Confirm the dates for admission and any competitive scholarship application separately.

For a student in the last two table rows, the difference is $9,000 per year. That arithmetic shows why checking the right row matters; it is not a prediction of the score someone will earn or an instruction to keep retesting indefinitely. Consider preparation time, test availability and reporting time alongside the possible benefit.

The college GPA requirement is a different number

The academic scholarship rules state up to eight fall/spring semesters for freshmen. Renewal includes undergraduate status, at least 12 UAH credits each fall and spring without interruption, 24 earned UAH credits over those terms and a cumulative 2.5 UAH GPA at the spring review. Spring starters have specific first-term rules.

Plan around earned credits as well as enrollment. Registering for enough credits and successfully completing enough credits are different checks. Before a withdrawal, internship or study-abroad term, ask how the award handles that particular arrangement. Save the policy with your award notice so you can distinguish the rule you entered under from a later revision.

A tuition award still leaves a budget to build

UAH's scholarship FAQ says freshman merit tuition funds are for tuition. Add required fees, housing, food, books and transport to the comparison. Do not call the top dollar tier a full ride unless your actual award and budget support that statement.

After calculating the remaining cost, compare the academic program and the likely time to finish. A lower annual price can become less attractive if your degree requires an additional unfunded term. Use offer comparison guidance to record both yearly cost and covered semesters.

Official chart, renewal rules and FAQ checked October 29, 2026. Annual values concern 2027-28 entrants and remain subject to the university's terms.
