USC merit scholarships for fall 2027: November or December depends on the major
For most USC majors, first-year applicants seeking merit consideration must apply by November 1, 2026 through Early Action or Early Decision. Dance, Dramatic Arts and Music use a December 1 Regular Decision route instead.
USC added a broader Early Decision option for fall 2027. That creates a planning choice, not a requirement to make a binding commitment in order to seek merit funding: eligible majors still have Early Action.

| Applicant route | Merit application date | Commitment distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Most majors, Early Action | November 1, 2026 | Nonbinding admission plan |
| Most majors, Early Decision | November 1, 2026 | Binding enrollment commitment under the agreement |
| Dance, Dramatic Arts or Music | December 1, 2026 | Regular Decision with program-specific materials |
USC's October 2026 application FAQ confirms the major-specific routes and says no extra application is needed for Office of Admission scholarships. Other USC organizations can have separate applications. Read the department's portfolio or audition instructions alongside the university deadline.
An early merit application need not be binding
The university's fall 2027 announcement says admitted Early Decision applicants agree to enroll and withdraw other applications. Early Action remains available. Understand the full agreement and affordability assumptions before selecting a plan.
If comparing college offers is central to your decision, account for that before choosing a binding route. A scholarship deadline and an enrollment commitment answer different questions. Applying earlier does not itself make a pending scholarship certain, and an admission decision can arrive before the final merit outcome.
Optional testing does not create a scholarship formula
USC's testing FAQ describes holistic merit review without a GPA or score formula. Fall 2027 applicants who choose not to submit SAT/ACT remain eligible for merit consideration. Applicants choosing to include scores must send official reports; English-proficiency requirements for international applicants are separate.
Keep the testing choice consistent across your application and supporting documents. A missing score report can matter when you selected score consideration, even though another applicant legitimately applies without testing. Follow the portal's instructions if your testing plan changes rather than assuming the absence of a report will be interpreted as opting out.
Track departmental materials and financial aid separately
USC's current deadline FAQ requires the Common Application and departmental supplements by the applicable deadline, while allowing some school-supplied documents to arrive shortly afterward. That limited allowance does not extend your own application or portfolio deadline. Request supporting documents early and follow up on unresolved items.
Need-based aid has separate forms and dates, so scholarship consideration alone does not complete that process. Keep an estimate based on confirmed aid until an actual award arrives, then review coverage and renewal conditions. Sources checked October 29, 2026.
