USF National Merit: compare the Florida and non-Florida packages
USF describes cost-of-attendance support for qualifying National Merit Finalists through different programs for Florida and non-Florida residents. Compare the two packages by their funding rules, not by assuming every award stacks on top of a full scholarship.
The benefits page is not separately labeled with an entering year. Confirm the terms for your class in the award notice before relying on a four-year budget; an active program page alone does not establish that every benefit applies unchanged to a new class.
Two residency routes, different offsets
On a smaller screen, scroll the table sideways to see every column.
| USF residency determination | Main program | Published treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Florida resident | Benacquisto | Fall/spring cost of attendance; offsets for Bright Futures and NMSC awards |
| Non-Florida resident | Golden Achievement | Fall/spring cost of attendance; offset for NMSC awards |
The official benefits page says these replace other Admissions awards, with a stated Tradition of Excellence exception for the Florida route. Do not add every Admissions scholarship from an earlier letter to the new package.
Finalist status is one step in the process
USF's instructions require admission records and National Merit Finalist status, followed by designating USF first choice with NMSC by its stated May 31 deadline. Semifinalist recognition alone is not the same qualification. Recheck that designation date for your competition year.
For 2027 entry, the freshman calendar lists January 15, 2027 for general merit consideration. That application-and-materials date and the later National Merit first-choice instruction perform different jobs. Do not postpone admission work until May because a designation deadline appears later.
What cost of attendance does and does not settle
Cost of attendance is a university budget, not a promise to pay any bill you choose. Ask which housing and food assumptions it uses, whether an upgraded room changes the amount, and what happens if your travel costs exceed the allowance. The published National Merit coverage specifies fall and spring; do not presume summer courses are included.
Make a separate list of expenses paid before aid disburses. A deposit, move-in trip or equipment purchase may require cash earlier even if a later aid refund helps cover the year. Ask about timing and available arrangements before treating a net-zero annual calculation as zero up-front cost.
Get the terms attached to your award
USF's general Admissions scholarship FAQ describes full-time enrollment, annual earned-credit and GPA conditions, but the National Merit funding routes can include additional program rules. Use the terms in your portal and the applicable program documents to confirm renewal. Do not substitute a general FAQ for the complete Benacquisto or Golden Achievement agreement.
A useful comparison with another National Merit college has five columns: remaining annual cost, covered terms, renewal conditions, degree fit and travel. Put benefits such as research opportunities in the decision too, but do not assign them imaginary cash values. The National Merit guide helps organize the college-choice process.
