WVU Foundation and Bucklew scholarships: the January 2027 route for West Virginia students

By Meritously · Published · 3 min read

WVU's Foundation and Bucklew competitions have an earlier, specific eligibility deadline: January 19, 2027 for the published 2027-28 cycle. They target qualifying West Virginia residents and should not be confused with a general admission deadline or an automatic award for meeting a GPA.

The published thresholds open a route to selection. They do not establish that every student with those credentials receives one of these awards.

Bucklew$15,000 per year, up to eight undergraduate semesters or degree completionTwenty entering freshmen
FoundationFinancial-aid-defined cost of attendance plus one-time $4,500 enhancement stipendFive selected from the twenty Bucklew Scholars

The Bucklew policy and Foundation policy require at least a 3.80 high-school GPA and ACT 30 or SAT 1360, plus the residency and school requirements. Students must attend and graduate from a West Virginia high school, with a stated senior-year West Virginia homeschooling alternative. Admission and updated qualifying records must be in place by January 19, 2027.

A new transcript does not automatically update the GPA

WVU says eligible students receive additional materials to complete. It also distinguishes test-score processing from GPA changes: an updated high-school GPA requires the university's GPA Update Request process. Do not assume that sending a midyear transcript alone changes the scholarship record.

Work backward from the record deadline. Allow time for the school to issue a transcript, for documents to arrive and for the requested update to appear. If a threshold depends on a new grade or score, track that requirement separately from admission. Keep a copy of the instructions and confirm unresolved status with the university.

Foundation is not Bucklew plus another full award

WVU's combination rules prohibit combining Foundation, Bucklew, University Merit and Climb Higher with each other. The highest eligible institutional award applies. Foundation also accounts for the Promise Scholarship rather than simply adding Promise above the covered cost.

Use the actual financial-aid offer to identify which award replaces which. A one-time enhancement stipend is different from annual living support, and a cost-of-attendance award follows the university's defined budget. Ask about any expenses outside that budget and the approved uses of enrichment funds.

Plan beyond selection

The institutional renewal policy includes these awards and generally requires a 2.75 overall GPA and 30 earned credits across fall, spring and summer. The award pages exclude fully online degree programs. Confirm your individual terms before changing programs or enrollment.

Keep another workable financial plan while selection proceeds. Meeting eligibility is useful, but a competition serving a small group cannot be the only affordability assumption. Sources checked October 29, 2026 against the explicit 2027-28 policies. The comparison guide helps distinguish the confirmed package from competitive possibilities.
