How to apply
Obtain nomination from an eligible high school; students cannot self-apply. The counselor submits one recommendation, transcript, and school profile. The nominee submits activities, awards, a personal statement, and a leadership essay. Complete any regional interview and final virtual interview, and separately apply to and gain admission to UVA. UVA may also refer selected early applicants. UVA uses Common App and requires the secondary-school report, school profile, transcript, and one academic-subject teacher evaluation; a separate counselor recommendation is optional. Fall 2027 admission is test optional.

High-school seniors selected for leadership, scholarship, and engaged citizenship. U.S. citizenship and financial need are not selection requirements; eligible schools outside the U.S. can nominate for Jefferson. Walentas is a distinct first-generation scholarship.
