- Award
- Each top-300 scholar receives $2,000 (with separate $2,000 school award). Top-40 finalist awards: $25,000 minimum, top ten $40,000-$250,000. Awards under $20,000 require documentation within two years; larger awards paid annually for education while enrolled in good standing, beginning within six years of award and ending within eight years of high-school matriculation.

- How to apply
- Submit online one independent original research project, up-to-20-page research report PDF, short essays, activities, disclosures and applicable research approvals. Request educator and project recommendations and counselor high-school report/transcript through the system; no mailed materials. Scores optional. All material and recommendations due together. Finalists complete additional assigned forms/tasks and attend finals.

- Who can apply
- Final secondary-school year, not graduated by deadline and no prior STS entry; over 13, with required minor consent, and under 21 for adult entrants. Any citizenship with full-time residence and school enrollment in listed U.S./territory areas; qualifying U.S. citizens at overseas schools need citizenship/accreditation proof. Pre-collegiate team research cannot be split into individual submissions; independent work alongside adult researchers can qualify.
- Good to know
- Maintain individual-project eligibility through June 1, 2027. Disclose paid mentoring, family/conflicts, AI and other support. No generative AI drafting of report/application/citations; permitted research assistance must be disclosed/cited. Scholar payments require W-9; finalist award conditions and forfeiture rules apply.
