- How to apply
- Complete your own online application with a photograph; parents, teachers, friends and mentors cannot complete it for you. Semifinalists provide a support letter from someone familiar with their environmental work, excluding parents/guardians, and attend a video call. Complete 2027 forms are not published.

- Who can apply
- Published 2026 rules: environmental change leaders ages 13 to 22 at the deadline, living in North America including Mexico, Canada and U.S. territories. Applicants must play a major leadership role in creating, organizing and implementing their effort. Final 2027 criteria are not published.
- Good to know
- The program generally favors leaders of ongoing group efforts. Standalone research/science-fair projects are excluded unless part of an ongoing environmental effort with a larger group; one-time events are generally excluded unless they produced measurable lasting impact with continuing leadership.
