Best portable scholarship options when your college major is still undecided

By Meritously · Published · 3 min read

If your major is undecided, start with scholarships that evaluate your academic work and contribution without requiring a particular degree field. Coolidge, Ron Brown and GE-Reagan offer useful portable routes for different student groups. Their eligibility is very different, so they do not belong on every student's application list.

We selected these options for college-choice flexibility, substantial support and evidence of academic or community contribution rather than a named major. This is an editorial shortlist, not a ranking of all scholarships. Portable still means subject to the provider's eligible-college, enrollment and continuing rules. Sources checked October 29, 2026.

For a junior: Coolidge preserves the choice of discipline

The Coolidge FAQ states there is no required major and the scholarship can be used at an accredited U.S. college where the recipient is admitted. The current eligibility rules restrict this cycle to juniors planning first full-time undergraduate enrollment in fall 2028. The selection timeline sets the deadline at December 1, 2026 at 5 p.m. Pacific.

This route can suit a student with broad intellectual interests, but it requires substantial reading and writing and a highly selective process. Do not accelerate or delay your graduation plans simply to match the award. Build an affordable college list independently of the result.

For an eligible senior: Ron Brown combines field flexibility with a specific mission

The Ron Brown program permits any academic field at an accredited U.S. four-year institution. Its applicant rules require Black/African American identity, U.S. citizenship or permanent residence, senior status, academic excellence, leadership, service and financial need. The application deadline is December 1, with school documents due December 15.

An undecided major is not a substitute for a clear account of your interests. Describe what you have explored and how you have contributed, even if the eventual degree title is still open. Avoid claiming certainty about a career merely because you think an application expects it.

For a leadership-focused senior: GE-Reagan uses a broad college route

The 2027 GE-Reagan rules call for full-time study at an accredited U.S. four-year college during 2027-28, alongside citizenship, senior-year, GPA and leadership criteria. The current application closes January 7, 2027 at 3 p.m. Eastern. Financial information is part of the process; do not describe the award as an automatic unrestricted grant.

Choose examples showing how you made decisions and followed through. A workplace commitment, community effort or school project can be meaningful when the role and result are specific. The application should explain your actual experience, not manufacture a major-linked story.

Preserve flexibility without ignoring practical limits

Before accepting any award, check eligible institutions, enrollment intensity, renewal, changes of college and how the provider coordinates with other aid. A portable scholarship can still have a limited funding period or require approval for a changed plan.

For a student choosing between several majors, compare how each college supports exploration and what a change would do to time to graduation. A scholarship that covers four years may not fund a fifth year caused by a late change. Keep that possibility visible without assuming it will happen.
