BGSU's BG Success scholarship: half the nonresident fee, not half the college bill

By Meritously · Published · 3 min read

BG Success reduces half of Bowling Green State University's nonresident fee for eligible students. It does not cut the entire tuition bill or full cost of attendance in half. Residents of three Michigan counties should also check a separate route covering the full nonresident fee.

The useful comparison is the amount you would still pay after the reduction, including base tuition and living costs. A percentage is meaningful only when the charge it applies to is clear.

BGSU's official scholarship page lists the same academic threshold for both: 3.0 cumulative GPA, or ACT 20, or SAT 1040. Admission applications are due February 18, 2027; no separate application is required for these routes. Firelands Pathway students are excluded. The alternatives are not a reason to add both fee reductions together.

Subtract the reduction from the right line

Suppose a fictional bill includes $13,000 base tuition, a $7,000 nonresident fee and $15,000 for other costs. A half-fee reduction saves $3,500, leaving $31,500 of the $35,000 budget. A full-fee reduction saves $7,000, leaving $28,000. These are invented amounts, not BGSU prices.

Create the same breakdown using the university's current estimate for your campus, program and housing plan. Keep scholarships and loans in different columns. A loan can finance a remaining charge, but it does not reduce the price in the same way a scholarship does.

Automatic consideration does not cover every scholarship process

BGSU separately offers a general scholarship application for admitted students, opening October 1. Some recommended opportunities require additional information. Complete the relevant process if you want consideration beyond the admission-based routes; being automatically considered for one award does not submit every other application.

Read each opportunity before writing. A need-based award, program-specific award and admission-based merit award can ask for different evidence. Track the requested documents next to each deadline, then check whether a combined offer replaces part of another scholarship before adding the amounts.

Check credits as well as grades

BGSU's general renewal guidance for these awards calls for full-time enrollment, a 3.0 cumulative GPA and 30, 60 and 90 completed credits after years one, two and three. Individual award terms control; the university reviews eligibility after spring.

A schedule can satisfy full-time enrollment yet leave you short of the annual credit target. Before dropping a course, ask how the change affects both progress and scholarship renewal. Save the terms that accompany your offer so later planning uses your award's rules. Source checked October 29, 2026. Compare confirmed remaining costs with the offer guide.
