BU Presidential Scholarship: what half tuition leaves to pay
Boston University's Presidential Scholarship is currently described as half tuition, effective beginning with students entering fall 2026. An older fixed-dollar figure found elsewhere is therefore not a reliable substitute for the current terms.
Half tuition can be substantial support while still leaving a large total budget. Housing, food and other costs do not disappear when half of one expense is covered.
The offer's main boundaries

| Question | Current published answer |
|---|---|
| How much? | Half tuition |
| Who may be considered? | First-year domestic and international applicants under the stated eligibility |
| Extra Presidential essay or form? | No |
| When? | Application and supporting credentials by December 1 |
| Duration? | Renewable for up to four undergraduate years, subject to terms |
These points come from BU's first-year merit page and Presidential instructions, checked October 29, 2026. Consideration is competitive; a complete application does not guarantee selection.
Use a cost breakdown rather than one headline
Make a row for tuition and a row for everything else: mandatory fees, housing, food, books, transportation and personal costs. Apply the half-tuition reduction to the tuition line only. Then subtract any other confirmed aid according to its combination rules.
For example, a fictional college with $60,000 tuition and $20,000 in other annual costs would still cost $50,000 after a half-tuition scholarship: $30,000 remaining tuition plus $20,000 other expenses. These are not BU's prices. The example shows why half tuition is not half of the full cost of attendance.
International eligibility is not a complete funding plan
BU's first-year merit page includes international students in Presidential eligibility. That does not automatically establish eligibility for every other scholarship or need-based program. Follow the financial-aid instructions for your citizenship and applicant category separately.
An international family should also calculate currency exposure, travel and any required health-related or immigration-related costs using current university guidance. Ask how aid appears in the official funding documentation. Keep the scholarship pending until awarded rather than treating the maximum possible offer as available funds.
Finish the existing application well
Because Presidential review does not require another essay, focus on the accuracy and completeness of the admission file. Confirm that supporting credentials are received by the scholarship deadline. Use your activities and writing to explain real interests and contributions rather than adding an unsolicited scholarship essay the process does not request.
Before enrolling, obtain the full renewal conditions and confirm how the half-tuition value applies in later years or unusual enrollment situations. The public description is a starting point; the award notice supplies individual terms. Compare the actual remaining price with other colleges using the offer guide.
