New Nebraskan scholarship: why 12 credits can mean a smaller award
A student can be full time at Nebraska and receive less than the full New Nebraskan scholarship. The spring/fall 2027 guidelines prorate the award below 15 credits, even though 12 credits meets the stated full-time enrollment minimum.
That distinction belongs in a course-planning conversation before registration. It is particularly useful for students bringing AP or dual-enrollment credit who may be considering lighter semesters.

On a smaller screen, scroll the table sideways to see every column.
| UNL fall/spring enrollment | Published award percentage | Planning question |
|---|---|---|
| 15+ credits | 100% | Does the course load fit your degree and workload? |
| 14 credits | 93% | Is the smaller award included in the budget? |
| 13 credits | 87% | Which required course creates the difference? |
| 12 credits | 80% | Can you fund the remaining charge? |
| Below 12 credits | 0% | Is an approved exception available? |
The 2027 New Nebraskan guidelines determine enrollment at census and say adding mini courses afterward does not reinstate the scholarship. Do not assume a later registration change repairs an earlier loss.
Enrollment and earned credits are separate tests
The award supports nonresident undergraduate tuition for up to four consecutive years or completion of a bachelor's degree. Renewal requires a 3.000 cumulative UNL GPA and 24 earned UNL credits annually; the GPA is not rounded. Summer use is excluded, and recipients must remain nonresidents.
Two semesters registered at 12 credits do not automatically prove 24 credits were earned. A withdrawal or unsuccessful course can change the count. Before dropping a class, ask both what happens to this semester's award and what happens at the annual renewal review. Those are separate financial questions.
Do not stop at the admission application
Nebraska's scholarship instructions encourage a November 1 admission priority date and a supplemental scholarship application by February 1 for departmental, leadership and service opportunities. The supplemental form opens through MyRED for admitted students. Verify the calendar for your own entry term.
Use the supplemental application to describe work and activities that the academic record does not explain. A part-time job, family responsibility or sustained community project may provide relevant context. Answer the actual questions; do not turn a list of roles into unsupported claims of impact.
Compare the price under your actual schedule
Ask the office for a semester estimate using the credits you intend to take. A schedule with fewer courses can reduce both tuition and scholarship support, so comparing only the percentage of scholarship lost can mislead. The useful number is the remaining bill plus living costs.

Keep any tuition-reciprocity benefit separate until the office confirms compatibility, and compare your documented offer with other nonresident options.
