Mississippi Office of Student Financial Aid

Mississippi Tuition Assistance Grant (MTAG)

Merit + needScholarship

Financial need is part of how this award is decided, alongside merit.

Award
Up to $500 annually freshman/sophomore or $1,000 junior/senior, also limited by gap between maximum Pell and applicant Pell eligibility. Normally eight semesters/twelve trimesters or required degree/certificate completion, whichever first. Renewal normally 2.50 cumulative college GPA; certificate routes use institutional satisfactory-progress standards.
Deadline
Mississippi State University official 2027-28 calendar confirms MAAPP application deadline September 15, 2027. State rules require supporting documents by October 15 following the application deadline; that stage is published as a recurring rule, without a 2027 year/time zone. Apply annually and monitor state requests.
How to apply
Submit annual MAAPP, verify account/email and monitor requests. New applicants and certain students returning after interruption supply two approved residency documents (e.g. Mississippi driver licence and FAFSA or approved state-tax/homestead/voter/vehicle records), plus official academic/test documentation and signed and notarized homeschool transcript including all courses and an unweighted seven-semester GPA on a 4.0 scale where applicable. Institution supplies enrolment/renewal grades; FAFSA alone does not apply for state aid. FAFSA is the usual financial determination. The sponsor FAQ and linked regulation permit a Statement of Certification as an alternative for students/parents who believe they will not qualify for the Federal Pell Grant; read and complete the certification statements in MAAPP carefully.
What you'll need
  • A separate scholarship application
Who can apply
Mississippi legal resident, normally one year before application. Standard school route 2.50 cumulative GPA plus ACT 15/SAT equivalent; ACT superscores accepted. Home education and high-school-equivalency routes have score/document alternatives without universal school GPA; 12 completed college hours with 2.50 college GPA can establish eligibility without original school score/GPA. Vocational/technical community-college certificate/applied-associate route need not take ACT unless college requires. Must be ineligible for maximum Pell; cannot be in aid default or owe grant repayment; institution general aid conditions apply.
Good to know
Eligible Mississippi nonprofit public/private institutions only; first certificate/associate/bachelor pathway. Continuous fall/spring full-time completion normally 12 credits each semester; summer not funded. Awards paid to institution, first toward tuition, contingent on appropriations and cost-of-attendance limits. Only one state undergraduate grant per term, choosing larger eligible award, and maximum combined eight semesters. GPA/enrolment loss has specified regain/appeal procedures; institution corrections have fall October 15 and spring March 15 verification deadlines.
