Alabama merit scholarships for 2027: read the score chart before you budget
The University of Alabama's 2027 merit chart gives out-of-state and international freshmen a useful starting point: a published annual award tied to GPA and a qualifying ACT or SAT score. The next question is what remains to pay. A large dollar scholarship is not automatically full tuition, and a tuition award is not automatically a full ride.
This guide focuses on the published automatic route, because it is easier to model before a competitive decision arrives. Check the official award notice before making a college commitment.
Three useful points on the 2027 chart
The official out-of-state and international chart lists these selected examples. Each requires at least a 3.50 GPA; the chart contains additional tiers.
On a smaller screen, scroll the table sideways to see every column.
| Award | ACT or SAT | Annual amount |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation in Excellence | 29 or 1330-1350 | $15,000 |
| UA Scholar | 30-31 or 1360-1410 | $24,000 |
| Presidential | 32-36 or 1420-1600 | $28,000 |
Read across a row, not down one column. In this selection, a 3.50 GPA alone does not identify an award. Keep your actual qualifying score beside the GPA rather than assuming the highest tier applies.
The report you send matters
Alabama requires official testing-agency scores for automatic awards and does not use superscores for scholarship purposes. The summer/fall 2027 priority deadline is December 4; the university uses GPA through junior year and requires official score reports by the deadline. Later consideration may depend on available funds.
Compare the financial aid timeline with the application instructions. Automatic awards are included in the undergraduate application. Some additional competitive opportunities use ASAM after admission, so applying at the last moment can leave too little time for those applications.
Calculate the unpaid cost without inventing an aid offer
Make separate lines for tuition, required fees, housing, food, books, transportation and personal expenses. Use the university's cost estimate for your residency and entry year. Subtract only confirmed grants and scholarships; keep loans and work earnings in separate columns.
For illustration, if a family's documented annual budget were $50,000 and its confirmed scholarship were $24,000, the remaining amount would be $26,000 before other aid. That is an arithmetic example, not Alabama's published cost or an estimate of your offer. Repeat the calculation for later years and ask how tuition increases affect a fixed-dollar award.
Decide where to spend application effort
A student close to a score threshold can compare the potential award difference with the cost and feasibility of another test date. Do not assume a new score will arrive in time; check both the test date and reporting deadline. A student applying without scores should investigate the separate competitive pathway instead of treating the automatic chart as a promise.
Before committing, request the renewal conditions in writing, including enrollment, academic progress and semester limits. Compare the resulting four-year budget with your other offers using the award comparison guide. The best funding choice is the affordable college that fits your academic plan, not necessarily the largest scholarship headline.
Scope and source check
Official Alabama scholarship, timeline and application pages checked October 29, 2026. This analysis concerns first-time out-of-state and international freshmen entering summer/fall 2027; transfer and Alabama-resident awards follow different rules. It does not estimate competitive selection odds.
