SWE Emerging First Year Scholars

ListedScholarship
Award
Multiple Society-selected scholarships with different sponsor amounts and renewal rules; the 2027-28 individual award list is not published. Current general guidance says funds are paid directly to the student in a single late-fall payment and have no spending restriction.
Deadline
The 2027-28 interest form says Emerging First Year applications are expected from early February to the end of March; exact dates will be released in the fall. These are tentative months, not a published deadline.
How to apply
Sign up on the official 2027-28 interest form for opening notifications; it is not the scholarship application. When open, one application considers all qualifying Society-selected scholarships. Current general guidance requires one recommendation by the application deadline; finalists provide an official transcript and recipients provide a sponsor-facing resume.
What you'll need
  • A separate scholarship application
  • Recommendations
Who can apply
Students entering their first year of college and enrolling in an ABET-accredited engineering, engineering technology or computer science program. Current general FAQ requires a 3.5 unweighted cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale, with re-entry/nontraditional applicants exempt. Complete sponsor-specific 2027-28 eligibility is not published.
Good to know
The 2026-27 application is closed; an official 2027-28 interest form is open. This is a collection of merit scholarships; specific donors may consider financial need. SWE's nearly $1.6 million reported for 2025 covers all of its scholarship programs, rather than an individual first-year award. A recommender who has known the applicant at least two years and is not a relative is strongly recommended.
