Quill and Scroll

Quill and Scroll Student Scholarships in Journalism (Nell, Gallup and Johns awards)

ListedScholarship
Award
Variable scholarships determined by the Quill and Scroll Scholarship Committee for the freshman year only, paid through the institution and potentially in two installments.
Deadline
The student scholarship page says applications for 2027 are open and lists May 7, 2027 as the closing date; the sentence retains an inconsistent 2026 application label.
How to apply
Submit the online application with two recommendations, one from a journalism teacher/adviser and one from a principal/counselor, on school letterhead as PDFs; a personal statement of at most 500 words; three examples of journalism; and a color JPG headshot no larger than 2 MB. Recommenders may email letters if school policy prevents student access.
What you'll need
  • Recommendations
  • A short essay or statement
  • Membership in the sponsoring organization
Who can apply
Current high-school seniors. Nell and Gallup awards require national winning work in a Quill and Scroll contest, including Yearbook Excellence, Writing/Photography/Multimedia or Eye on Ivy. Johns is available to all Quill and Scroll senior members. Recipients must major in journalism or a related communications area.
Good to know
Funds can pay tuition, room and board. Individual dollar amounts are determined by the committee and are not published. The 2027 page lists May 7, 2027, although one sentence still calls it the 2026 application.
