- How to apply
- Submit to one local VFW Post the entry form with Scout, unit-leader and parent signatures, uniform photograph, one-page school record, up to three pages of Scouting record including the major award project, one-page community-service record and three recommendations from a Scout leader, community member and teacher/faculty member. Homeschool applicants may use a parent for the teacher recommendation.

- Who can apply
- Registered, active Scouts who have earned the Eagle Scout Award, Girl Scout Gold Award, Venturing Summit Award or Sea Scout Quartermaster Award; maximum age 18 (still eligible if you turn 18 during the nomination year and are in high school at the deadline). Prior national Scout of the Year winners are ineligible.
- Good to know
- Current VFW overview and rules explain recognition and the local Post entry process but do not publish a current dollar amount or dated 2027 entry deadline. Older VFW winner announcements describe scholarships up to $5,000, which cannot be represented as a confirmed current prize.
