Horatio Alger Scholarships for High School Seniors (Denny Sanford, Washington Foundation and Bergeron awards)

This is a group of awards reached through one application. Each award inside it has its own rules.

Award

Denny Sanford awards: Arizona State 25 x $10,000; Augustana 6 x $25,000; Black Hills State 12 x $12,500; Dakota State 15 x $10,000; Long Island University 6 x $40,000. Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation (Montana): 50 x $10,000 plus $5,000 institutional match. Bergeron Everglades Environmental Steward (Florida): 4 x $20,000.

Deadline

Undated senior application window: December 1-February 15, noon Eastern Time. The dated toolkit still lists December 1, 2025-February 15, 2026 and February 20, 2026 counselor/support forms; no confirmed 2027 dates.

How to apply

One online application generally covers eligible listed programs, except designated specialized programs. Submit adversity/American Dream responses, counselor certification, support verification by a non-relative adult over 21, transcript with fall grades and appropriate income verification. Confirm program-specific form deadlines.

Who can apply

U.S. citizens with family adjusted gross income at most $100000, perseverance through adversity and commitment to a bachelor’s. Denny Sanford senior awards require full-time senior status, 2.5 GPA and immediate enrollment at the named university. Washington requires a Montana senior, 2.0 GPA and listed Montana institutions. Bergeron allows Florida seniors or college students, 2.0 GPA and a Florida environmental-sciences/studies degree.

Good to know

Grouped programs have distinct rules and funding schedules; duration and renewal conditions are not fully public. Washington’s extra $5000 institutional match excludes listed community and tribal colleges. Bergeron is not limited to seniors. The $25000 National Scholarship is a separate junior program. Current pages list award counts and totals without dated 2027 confirmation.
